Sacramento - The start of the new year means the end of a confusing business schedule at the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). All DMV offices statewide will now be open for business 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m., Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, and 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Additionally, 53 locations will offer service on the third Saturday of each month from 8:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.
“Gov. Schwarzenegger is committed to improving customer service,” said Business, Transportation & Housing Agency Secretary Sunne Wright McPeak. “We listened to our customers and are providing them with additional options for increased convenience.”
When DMV previously offered Saturday service, the decision was made to close on Mondays so that the total number of business days per week would remain unchanged. But Monday closures resulted in more than doubling the wait time for customers the following Tuesday.
“Changing the business hours was a practical decision,” said DMV Chief Deputy Director Ken Miyao. “This new schedule is easier to understand and allows us to offer the best of both worlds, weekend service and regular weekday hours.”
High-tech innovations like electronic line-management software and ATM/debit card readers add to a long list of services that empower DMV customers with additional choices and convenience. Customers can go online to make appointments, calculate fees, and renew their licenses and vehicle registrations, among many other services.
