Curriculum Verification for Private Secondary Schools PDF Version
New Policy
Effective immediately, private secondary schools no longer need to provide the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) with curriculums to verify that distance-based classroom driver education, such as Internet classes, meet the requirements specified in the California Vehicle Code (CVC) §12814.6.
Private Secondary School Procedures
The following procedures apply to private secondary schools that offer a distance-based learning (non-classroom) driver education course. To receive Driver Education Completion Certificates and other related supplies follow the chart:
| Step | Action |
|---|---|
| 1 | For each school year, complete the Authorization/Requisition for Driver Instruction Forms, DL 396 (REV. 10/2006). See the attached sample form.
|
| 2 | If using equivalent curriculum, for each school year, complete the Private Secondary Non-Classroom Driver Education Curriculum Certification, DL 396B (NEW 10/2006). See the attached sample form.
|
| 3 | After the initial authorization for the school year, schools may order additional driver education supplies by completing a Driver Education Supply Request, DL 396A (Rev. 10/2006). (Prior to October 2006, the request for additional driver education supplies was on the back of the DL 396.) |
NOTE: An instructor, secretary, or representative is not an authorized signatory for the DL 396, the DL 396A, or the DL 396B.
Background
Education Code §51220.6 requires private secondary schools to use the DMV curriculum or the educational equivalent to the DMV curriculum for their distance-based driver education courses, such as Internet classes. A review of Education Code §51220.6 determined that compliance could be met with the completion of the DL 396 and DL 396B.
The DL 396A replaced the information previously listed on the back of the DL 396. The DL 396A simplifies ordering additional driver education supplies after the initial annual authorization.
