The Real ID Act Overview

The federal REAL ID Act was passed by Congress and signed by the President in May 2005, in an effort to strengthen the security of the nation.

The Act sets minimum standards for the creation and issuance of state driver license/identification (DL/ID) cards that will be acceptable for official federal purposes as defined by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

The final REAL ID ACT regulations have been released by DHS. California has requested and was granted an extension; this means there will be no immediate impact to California’s driver license and identification card holders. Your California DL/ID card will continue to be honored for boarding federally regulated commercial aircraft, entering federal facilities, as well as nuclear power plants.
