October 18-24, 2009: National Teen Driver Safety WeekOct. 18-24, 2009 is National Teen Driver Safety Week. In 2008, more than 4,200 teens aged 16-19 years of age died in the U.S., and more than 400,000 were treated in emergency departments for injuries sustained in motor vehicle crashes Distracted Driving – texting, cell-phone use and other activities -- is a leading cause of these needless fatal and injury collisions. Crashes that can be prevented. According to Impact Teen Drivers, a leading safety non-profit that educates and motivates teens to make safer choices while driving, at least 75 percent of all crashes involving teens had nothing to do with drugs and/or alcohol. Parents, families and schools can get involved locally by adopting materials and safe-driving practices into discussions and curriculums. Together, we can make a difference. Impact Teen Drivers is sponsored by California Casualty Auto & Home Insurance, the California Association of Highway Patrolmen, California Teachers Association; and supported by partners including the California State Firefighters Association, Association of California School Administrators, California State PTA, California Highway Patrol, the Department of Motor Vehicles, and the California Department of Education.
