DMV Driver Handbook Available for the iPad
New and Interactive Option for Preparing for the Written Test
SACRAMENTO - The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has introduced a new dynamic and interactive version of the Driver Handbook for the Apple iPad tablet to help new drivers prepare for DMV's written exam.
"We transformed our traditional driver handbook into a dynamic and interactive experience," said DMV Chief Deputy Director Jean Shiomoto. "This new iPad version of the DMV handbook offers customers innovative educational materials to help improve driver safety on California's roadways and highways."
The Handbook is primarily designed to help prepare new drivers for the DMV's written test of traffic laws and road signs. New and experienced drivers will also find this handbook a valuable resource for information about safe driving.
The DMV Driver Handbook on the iPad offers a full-screen educational experience including diagrams, photos, videos, and quizzes. The handbook's other useful features include text highlighting, content search, a detailed glossary and the ability to take electronic notes and share information on Facebook or Twitter. The Handbook includes sample tests, DMV driving videos and list of local DMV field offices.

The electronic version of the DMV Driver Handbook for the iPad was created using DMV's in-house information technology and website services team, which was instrumental in selecting the template, customizing the program, and designing a layout.
DMV also has a DMV Now app for smartphones that helps drivers prepare for the written driver license exam, learn about safe driving by watching DMV driving videos, and find local DMV field offices. In 2011, the Android and iPhone apps earned the California DMV two of the Center for Digital Government's Best of California Awards during the annual Government Technology Conference in Sacramento. In 2013, DMV was named a 2013 Computerworld Honors Laureate by IDG's Computerworld publication. The annual award program honors visionary applications of information technology promoting positive social, economic and educational change.
The DMV Driver Handbook can be downloaded for the iPad for free through the iBooks app bookstore. You must first download the iBooks app for free on your iPad through the Apple App Store. Hard copies of the driver handbook are still available at DMV field offices statewide or can be viewed online at www.dmv.ca.gov.
"DMV's goal is to provide customers with useful educational tools that facilitate learning and help make California's roads safer," added Shiomoto.
