Simple Refund Online Request

This online service allows you to request a refund of vehicle/vessel license fees or reissue fees (if eligible; see below for eligibility guidelines).

Before you begin…

  1. Make sure you are eligible to request a refund using this online tool by reviewing the eligibility guidelines below.

  2. Have on hand the vehicle identification number (VIN) or hull identification number (HIN) of the vehicle or vessel for which you are requesting a refund.

  3. If requesting a refund for driver’s license fees, have your driver’s license number handy. If requesting a refund for registration fees or penalties, have your vehicle license plate number (or vessel registration number, for a boat) handy.

  4. Know the date fees were paid, the name of the location where they were paid, and the payment method used.

Are you eligible to request a refund online?

You ARE eligible…

If you are requesting a refund of vehicle/vessel license fees charged for late payment and you know that the payment was made on time.

If you are requesting a refund of vehicle/vessel license fees for a vehicle/vessel that left California and was registered in another state before the registration period expired.

If you are requesting a refund of reissue fees because an action that required the fee has been dismissed and the dismissal has been reported to DMV by the court.

Ineligible to request a refund using the online system?

No problem. Just complete and mail an Application for Refund (ADM 399) along with any required documentation to the address provided on the form.
