{"id":13723,"date":"2020-04-15T15:24:27","date_gmt":"2020-04-15T22:24:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/handbook\/vehicle-industry-registration-procedures-manual-2\/report-of-sale-used-vehicles\/distribution-of-the-report-of-sale-used-vehicle-reg-51\/"},"modified":"2024-03-13T10:26:54","modified_gmt":"2024-03-13T17:26:54","slug":"distribution-of-the-report-of-sale-used-vehicle-reg-51","status":"publish","type":"dmv_handbook","link":"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/es\/handbook\/vehicle-industry-registration-procedures-manual-2\/report-of-sale-used-vehicles\/distribution-of-the-report-of-sale-used-vehicle-reg-51\/","title":{"rendered":"8.020 Distribution of the Report of Sale-Used Vehicle (REG 51) (VC \u00a7\u00a74456 and 5901)"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Use the following for distribution of the REG 51.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\n<strong>Application copy<\/strong> (upper portion of the original).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Within 30 days of the date of sale, submit the application copy to DMV with the fees and documents required to transfer the vehicle.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Exceptions:<\/strong> Deliver the application copy and all transfer documents to the buyer instead of DMV for the following situations:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Buyer demands Certificate of Title (see Section 8.055).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Public agency sales (see Section 8.070).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sales to Consul Corps employees (see Section 8.060).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mail order sales (see Section 8.080).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Purchaser\u2019s temporary identification copy<\/strong> (bottom portion of the original)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For customer privacy, fold the purchaser\u2019s copy so that only the upper portion with the report of sale number, vehicle make, and vehicle identification number show <strong>y<\/strong> place it in the lower rear window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If the information will be obscured, place it in the lower right corner of either the windshield or a side window.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For trailers, display in the same manner in the towing vehicle.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This authorizes operation of the vehicle until the buyer receives the license plates and registration card.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Exceptions:<\/strong> Do<strong> not<\/strong> attach the purchaser\u2019s copy to the vehicle on:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vehicles to be altered before registration (see Section 6.025, New Vehicles Sold by California Dealers).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Used Vehicles Sold for Registration in Another State (see Section 8.050).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Used Vehicle Sold for Use on Private Property (see Section 8.035).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Used Vehicle Sold for Export to Another Country (see Section 8.040).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Title Only and Transfer Only sales (see Chapter 11).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reporting Used Vehicle Sales to IRP Operators (see Section 8.075).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Dealer\u2019s notice<\/strong> (bottom portion of the replacement)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No later than the fifth <strong>calendar<\/strong> day following the sale date, not counting the actual date of the sale, mail the dealer\u2019s notice to the DMV address shown on the REG 51.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This releases the dealer from civil liability arising from operation of the vehicle.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The dealer\u2019s notice <strong>cannot<\/strong> be submitted to a field office.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Dealer\u2019s book copy<\/strong> (upper part of the replacement)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Retain the dealer\u2019s copy for four years (this corresponds to DMV\u2019s retention period).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The books are the property of DMV and may be inspected at any time (VC \u00a7\u00a74456, 5901, and 11714e).<\/li>\n<\/ul>","protected":false},"featured_media":0,"parent":13708,"menu_order":5,"template":"","dmv_task":[11],"dmv_functional_page_type":[64],"dmv_handbook_category":[901,595],"class_list":["post-13723","dmv_handbook","type-dmv_handbook","status-publish","hentry","dmv_task-educational","dmv_functional_page_type-informational","dmv_handbook_category-report-of-sale-used-vehicles","dmv_handbook_category-vehicle-industry-reg-procedures-manual"],"featured_image_src":null,"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.2 -
