(VC \u00a74152.5)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Prior fees and\/or penalties cannot be collected on the assumption that they were due at an earlier date.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<body><figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table border=\"1\"><tbody>\n<tr>\n<th scope=\"col\">If the RO Is<br>\n<\/th>\n        <th scope=\"col\">And the Nonresident Vehicle<br>\n<\/th>\n        <th scope=\"col\">Then Fees Become Due on<br>\n<\/th>\n      <\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td rowspan=\"3\" valign=\"top\"><span class=\"mobile-title\">If the RO Is\n<\/span>New (changing ownership)<br>\n<\/td>\n        <td valign=\"top\"><span class=\"mobile-title\">And the Nonresident Vehicle\n<\/span>Was sold by a California licensed dealer<br>\n<\/td>\n        <td valign=\"top\"><span class=\"mobile-title\">Then Fees Become Due on\n<\/span>The date of first retail sale. <br>Note: California dealers have 30 days from the date of sale on the REG 51to submit fees without penalty (VC \u00a79553c.1).<br>\n<\/td>\n      <\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\"><span class=\"mobile-title\">If the RO Is\n<\/span>Was purchased outside of<br>California<br>\n<\/td>\n        <td valign=\"top\"><span class=\"mobile-title\">And the Nonresident Vehicle\n<\/span>The date of entry.<br>\n<\/td>\n      <\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\"><span class=\"mobile-title\">If the RO Is\n<\/span>Was acquired or purchased <strong>in<\/strong> California<br><strong>Note:<\/strong> If the vehicle was brought into California by someone other than the applicant\/purchaser; the date of entry must be shown, or if unknown, \u201cunknown\u201d must be printed.<br>\n<\/td>\n        <td valign=\"top\"><span class=\"mobile-title\">And the Nonresident Vehicle\n<\/span>The date of purchase.<br>Exception: Fees were posted recently on a report of deposit of fees (RDF) for a nonresident application (type transaction code[TTC] B00) by a prior owner).<br>\n<\/td>\n      <\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\"><span class=\"mobile-title\">If the RO Is\n<\/span>The same (no ownership change)<br>\n<\/td>\n        <td valign=\"top\"><span class=\"mobile-title\">And the Nonresident Vehicle\n<\/span>Is currently registered out of state<br>\n<\/td>\n        <td valign=\"top\"><span class=\"mobile-title\">Then Fees Become Due on\n<\/span>Whichever of the following occurs first:<br>\u2022 The date residency is established (refer to this chapter).<br>\u2022 The date after the out-of-state registration expires.<br>\u2022 The date of entry, if owner is already a California resident.<br>Exception: Fees for commercial vehicles are due upon date of entry, unless registered as an auto in the former state.<br>\n<\/td>\n      <\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td rowspan=\"2\" valign=\"top\"><span class=\"mobile-title\">If the RO Is\n<\/span>The same (no ownership change)<br>\n<\/td>\n        <td valign=\"top\"><span class=\"mobile-title\">And the Nonresident Vehicle\n<\/span>Was <strong>not<\/strong> currently registered upon entry into California <strong>or<\/strong> no proof of current registration can be provided<br><strong>Note:<\/strong> Must have proof of nonresident registration, nonresident title, or a letter from the motor vehicle division.<br>\n<\/td>\n        <td valign=\"top\"><span class=\"mobile-title\">Then Fees Become Due on\n<\/span>Whichever of the following occurs later:<br>\u2022 The date of entry.<br>\u2022 The date after the out-of-state registration expires.<br>\n<\/td>\n      <\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\"><span class=\"mobile-title\">If the RO Is\n<\/span>Is a <strong>commercial<\/strong> vehicle registered as a<br>commercial vehicle in the last state of registration (refer to Commercial Vehicle section in this chapter)<br>\n<\/td>\n        <td valign=\"top\"><span class=\"mobile-title\">And the Nonresident Vehicle\n<\/span>The date of entry <strong>unless<\/strong> the vehicle is currently registered and was parked without fees becoming due.<br><strong>Note:<\/strong> If parked, fees become due on whichever of the following occurs first:<br>\u2022 The date of first operation.<br>\u2022 The date following expiration of the out-of-state registration. The applicant <strong>must<\/strong> apply for registration or planned nonoperation (PNO) prior to the vehicle\u2019s out-of-state registration expiration to avoid penalties or fees\/penalties.<br>\n<\/td>\n      <\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td rowspan=\"2\" valign=\"top\"><span class=\"mobile-title\">If the RO Is\n<\/span>A nonresident active duty military<br>service member or their nonresident<br>spouse (refer to appropriate sections in this chapter<br>\n<\/td>\n        <td valign=\"top\"><span class=\"mobile-title\">And the Nonresident Vehicle\n<\/span>Is <strong>not<\/strong> currently registered in their home state or state of last duty station<br>\n<\/td>\n        <td valign=\"top\"><span class=\"mobile-title\">Then Fees Become Due on\n<\/span>The date of entry<br>\n<\/td>\n      <\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\"><span class=\"mobile-title\">If the RO Is\n<\/span>\n<strong>Is<\/strong> currently registered in their home state or state of last duty station<br>\n<\/td>\n        <td valign=\"top\"><span class=\"mobile-title\">And the Nonresident Vehicle\n<\/span>Whichever of the following occurs first:<br>\u2022 The date after the current registration expires.<br>\u2022 The date after discharge from military service.<br>\u2022 The date the application is <strong>completed<\/strong>.<br><strong>Note:<\/strong> Active duty military personnel may renew their vehicle\u2019s registration in their home state instead of registering in California<br>\n<\/td>\n      <\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\"><span class=\"mobile-title\">If the RO Is\n<\/span>A California resident or a California business<br>\n<\/td>\n        <td valign=\"top\"><span class=\"mobile-title\">And the Nonresident Vehicle\n<\/span>Has not yet entered California, but the applicant wishes to initiate California registration<br>\n<\/td>\n        <td valign=\"top\"><span class=\"mobile-title\">Then Fees Become Due on\n<\/span>Whichever of the following occurs first:<br>\u2022 The date of entry.<br>\u2022 The date the application is<strong> completed<\/strong>.<br>Note: Since the system will not accept future dates, if the applicant starts the process to register and the application is an RDF\u2019s, change the date fees due upon return of the application to one of the above.<br>\n<\/td>\n      <\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\"><span class=\"mobile-title\">If the RO Is\n<\/span>A nonresident (individual or business)<br>\n<\/td>\n        <td valign=\"top\"><span class=\"mobile-title\">And the Nonresident Vehicle\n<\/span>Has <strong>not<\/strong> entered California<br>\n<\/td>\n        <td valign=\"top\"><span class=\"mobile-title\">Then Fees Become Due on\n<\/span>No date, because the application<strong> cannot<\/strong> be started when the applicant is a nonresident and the vehicle has not entered California.<br>\n<\/td>\n      <\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\"><span class=\"mobile-title\">If the RO Is\n<\/span>A nonresident (individual or business) having an established place of business in California<br>\n<\/td>\n        <td valign=\"top\"><span class=\"mobile-title\">And the Nonresident Vehicle\n<\/span>Is being used in California<br>\n<\/td>\n        <td valign=\"top\"><span class=\"mobile-title\">Then Fees Become Due on\n<\/span>The date of entry.<br>\n<\/td>\n      <\/tr>\n<\/tbody><\/table>\n<\/figure>\n<\/body>\n\n\n<p>For vehicles brought into California by someone other than the applicant\/purchaser, the:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Date of entry <strong>must <\/strong>show \u201cunknown.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fees are due from the date of purchase <strong>unless<\/strong> it can be determined from the application documents that fees became due at an earlier date.<strong> Example:<\/strong> When multiple transfers have occurred.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><br><\/p>\n","protected":false},"featured_media":0,"parent":14038,"menu_order":10,"template":"","dmv_task":[11],"dmv_functional_page_type":[64],"dmv_handbook_category":[913,595],"class_list":["post-14068","dmv_handbook","type-dmv_handbook","status-publish","hentry","dmv_task-educational","dmv_functional_page_type-informational","dmv_handbook_category-nonresident-vehicles","dmv_handbook_category-vehicle-industry-reg-procedures-manual"],"featured_image_src":null,"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.2 -
