{"id":14137,"date":"2020-04-15T15:29:04","date_gmt":"2020-04-15T22:29:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/handbook\/vehicle-industry-registration-procedures-manual-2\/nonresident-vehicles\/return-of-nonresident-license-plates\/"},"modified":"2024-03-13T12:53:25","modified_gmt":"2024-03-13T19:53:25","slug":"return-of-nonresident-license-plates","status":"publish","type":"dmv_handbook","link":"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/es\/handbook\/vehicle-industry-registration-procedures-manual-2\/nonresident-vehicles\/return-of-nonresident-license-plates\/","title":{"rendered":"12.160 Return of Nonresident License Plates (VC \u00a74302)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Vehicle owners may retain their out-of-state license plates when:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Expired.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The vehicle has \u201cdual registration\u201d or interstate registration (for example, a commuter who resides in Nevada and California with a vehicle registered in both states).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The owner&nbsp;<strong>must<\/strong>&nbsp;return them to the motor vehicle department of the state where they were issued.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If an application for California registration is submitted with out-of-state license plates, and the application is&nbsp;<strong>incomplete<\/strong>, return the license plates to the owner and inform them to keep the license plates&nbsp;<strong>until<\/strong>&nbsp;the application is finalized. Unexpired nonresident license plates surrendered upon application for California registration may be returned to the motor vehicle registration authority in the applicant\u2019s home state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span role=\"region\" class=\"format-label--note\"><span class=\"format-label__text\">Note<\/span> Switzerland license plates\u00a0do <strong>not<\/strong>\u00a0have an assigned expiration date and\u00a0<strong>must<\/strong> be\u00a0picked up.
