{"id":14785,"date":"2020-04-15T15:39:41","date_gmt":"2020-04-15T22:39:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/handbook\/vehicle-industry-registration-procedures-manual-2\/special-plates\/purple-heart-license-plates\/"},"modified":"2024-04-25T14:25:36","modified_gmt":"2024-04-25T21:25:36","slug":"purple-heart-license-plates","status":"publish","type":"dmv_handbook","link":"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/es\/handbook\/vehicle-industry-registration-procedures-manual-2\/special-plates\/purple-heart-license-plates\/","title":{"rendered":"21.225 Purple Heart License Plates (VC \u00a75101.8)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Purple Heart License Plates may be issued to recipients of the Purple Heart at no fee for any automobile, commercial vehicle, trailer, or motorcycle owned by the recipient which<strong>&nbsp;is not<\/strong>&nbsp;operated for hire or compensation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recipients of Purple Heart recognition awards may obtain multiple Purple Heart license plates (one set for each vehicle the recipient owns or co-owns). The Purple Heart award recipient is not required to have more than one award to order more than one set of license plates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span role=\"region\" class=\"format-label--note\"><span class=\"format-label__text\">Note<\/span> A Purple Heart recipient who is also a qualified disabled veteran, may request the Disabled Veteran (DV) License Plate fee exemption&nbsp;<strong>y&nbsp;<\/strong>issuance of Purple Heart License Plates in lieu of DV License Plates.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to the issuance requirements of the Purple Heart License Plates, the applicant&nbsp;<strong>must&nbsp;<\/strong>provide the proof of eligibility documentation required for a disabled veteran as shown in the Disabled Veteran License Plates section in this chapter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A Disabled Person (DP) Parking Placard&nbsp;<strong>must&nbsp;<\/strong>be displayed in the vehicle to receive the DP parking privileges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The DV License Plate fee exemption may be used for&nbsp;<strong>one&nbsp;<\/strong>vehicle only. An applicant who chooses this option&nbsp;<strong>cannot&nbsp;<\/strong>have DV License Plates assigned to another vehicle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Original Sequential License Plate Application\u2014the following must be submitted:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A Special Recognition License Plate Application (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/es\/file\/special-recognition-license-plate-application-reg-17a-pdf\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">REG 17A (PDF)<\/a>) form.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The current registration card in the applicant\u2019s name or the documents required to register the vehicle to the applicant.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>One of the following as proof of the applicant\u2019s eligibility:<br>\u2014 Orders awarding the Purple Heart to the applicant.<br>\u2014 A copy of the applicant\u2019s service record or discharge papers showing the Purple Heart award.<br>\u2014 Certification from a Purple Heart organization.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The license plates currently assigned to the vehicle.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The fees due.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Exchange<\/strong>\u2014Existing personalized license plates may not be exchanged to personalized Purple Heart License Plates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Renewal\/Reassignment<\/strong>\u2014No additional fee is required for renewal or reassignment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Retention of License Plates by Surviving Spouse<\/strong>\u2014Purple Heart License Plates may be retained by the surviving spouse upon the death of the license plate owner (VC \u00a75101.8(d)).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Surviving spouse\u2014the following must be submitted:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Registration in the applicant\u2019s name or the documents to register the vehicle in the applicant\u2019s name.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A Statement of Facts (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/es\/file\/statement-of-facts-reg-256-pdf\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">REG 256 (PDF)<\/a>) form stating that the spouse of the Purple Heart License Plate owner and wishes to retain the license plates.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Family Heirlooms<\/strong>\u2014A family member (limited to parent, stepparent, child, stepchild, grandparent, stepgrandparent, sibling, and stepsibling) may keep&nbsp;<strong>one&nbsp;<\/strong>Purple Heart License Plate as a family heirloom upon the death of the Purple Heart License Plate owner and surviving spouse, if any.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Family member\u2014the following must be submitted:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A Statement of Facts (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/es\/file\/statement-of-facts-reg-256-pdf\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">REG 256 (PDF)<\/a>) stating the relationship to the license plate owner or surviving spouse, the license plate being retained will not be placed on a vehicle, and will be kept as a family heirloom.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The license plate not being retained or must write on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/es\/file\/statement-of-facts-reg-256-pdf\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">REG 256 (PDF)<\/a> the disposition of the license plate, if missing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Surrender of License Plates Required<\/strong>\u2014License plates\u00a0<strong>must\u00a0<\/strong>be surrendered to DMV within 60 days following the death of the Purple Heart License Plate owner\u00a0<strong>or\u00a0<\/strong>the surviving spouse, as appropriate, or upon the vehicle registration expiration date, whichever occurs first.<\/li>\n<\/ul>","protected":false},"featured_media":0,"parent":14641,"menu_order":46,"template":"","dmv_task":[11],"dmv_functional_page_type":[64],"dmv_handbook_category":[595],"class_list":["post-14785","dmv_handbook","type-dmv_handbook","status-publish","hentry","dmv_task-educational","dmv_functional_page_type-informational","dmv_handbook_category-vehicle-industry-reg-procedures-manual"],"featured_image_src":null,"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.2 -
