When a lienholder\/legal owner (LO) name is omitted on the California Certificate of Title because it was not <\/strong>shown on the registration application or due to a DMV error y <\/strong>an application is received to correct the omission, the application must <\/strong>be forwarded to the Involuntary Transfer Section (ITS) in DMV headquarters.<\/p>\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n\n
If the
\n<\/th>\n 		ITS Will
\n<\/th>\n <\/tr>\n
If the\n<\/span>Omission is a DMV error
\n<\/td>\n 		ITS Will\n<\/span>\n
    \n
  • Cancel the incorrect title.<\/li>\n
  • Issue a corrected title to the LO, provided <\/strong>the vehicle has not been encumbered with another lien.<\/li>\n <\/ul>\n<\/td>\n <\/tr>\n
If the\n<\/span>DMV has issued a title to a second LO due to another lien taken on the vehicle
\n<\/td>\n 		ITS Will\n<\/span>\n
    \n
  • Place a stop on the vehicle record.<\/li>\n
  • Notify all parties that any outstanding California Certificate of Title will not <\/strong>be honored until the matter is resolved.<\/li>\n <\/ul>\nNOTE<\/strong>: A resolution may be to submit the properly released California Certificate of Title or <\/strong>a court order.
    \n<\/td>\n <\/tr>\n
If the\n<\/span>Title was used by the registered owner to transfer ownership of the vehicle y <\/strong>a new title has been issued to the buyer
\n<\/td>\n <\/tr>\n<\/tbody><\/table>\n<\/figure>\n<\/body>\n\n\n

Note<\/span> A courtesy stop may be placed on the vehicle record for 30 days to allow the dealer or LO to obtain a restraining order and stop the issuance of any title until a resolution can be made.
