Buyers have 10 days after purchasing the vehicle to transfer ownership from the seller to themselves, and sellers have 5 days after the sale to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/es\/vehicle-registration\/titles\/title-transfers-and-changes\/notice-of-transfer-and-release-of-liability-nrl\/\">report the transfer of ownership to DMV<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-dmv-spacer-block spacer-box\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-dmv-container shadow-box\">\n<p><strong>To take over ownership of a vehicle, you will need:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The vehicle\u2019s title (sometimes referred to as a pink slip), signed by the person selling the car. (Their signature is required on Line 1 of the title.)\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If the vehicle\u2019s title has been lost, stolen, or damaged, complete an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/es\/file\/reg-227-pdf\/\">Application for Replacement or Transfer of&nbsp;Title (REG 227) (PDF)<\/a> form.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If the seller is not the owner whose name is on the title, you will need a Bill of Sale signed by both the seller and the person whose name appears on the title.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A record of the odometer mileage (if the vehicle is less than 10 years old).\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If the title does not have a line where you can write the mileage information, complete a Vehicle\/ Vessel Transfer and Reassignment (REG 262) form. Make sure both the buyer and seller sign the form. <cite class=\"dmv-citation\">The REG 262 form is not available online because it is printed on security paper, which makes it compliant with federal odometer disclosure regulations.<\/cite><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A smog certification.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/es\/vehicle-registration\/registration-fees\/\">Applicable fees<\/a> and a use tax.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You can transfer ownership of the vehicle by mailing your completed form to DMV or visiting a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/es\/locations\/\">DMV field office<\/a> in person.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div
