FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
November 19, 2019

Sacramento – The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) teams up with Univision 19 (KUVS-TV) tomorrow, November 20, to educate Spanish-speaking Sacramento residents about REAL ID driver licenses and identification cards. DMV representatives will discuss the REAL ID program during the station’s morning news program “A Primera Hora” and will host a phone bank during its 6 p.m. newscast, in which DMV representatives will answer viewer questions.

This REAL ID phone bank will focus specifically on a Spanish-speaking audience. (Note: DMV employees will not have access to individual DMV records during the call-in session and will not be able to address customer-specific issues.)

The DMV and Univision19 want residents to be prepared for upcoming changes to federal identification requirements. Starting October 1, 2020, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security will require a valid passport or other federally approved document, like a REAL ID driver license or identification card, to board flights within the United States and access secure federal facilities and military bases.

For Californians who want to continue to use their driver license or identification card to fly within the United States or enter secure federal facilities, the DMV offers residents a federal compliant REAL ID driver license and identification card, identified with a bear and star.

To apply, individuals must visit a DMV office and bring the following documents:

One Proof of Identity – Original or CertifiedImage of REAL ID Driver License with arrow pointing to the gold star and bear
(Ex: Valid passport, birth certificate, etc.)

One Proof of Social Security Number

Two Proofs of California Residency – Paper Copies
(Ex: Utility bill, cell phone bill, bank statement, vehicle registration)

For a complete list of acceptable documents, visit REALID.dmv.ca.gov

Timesaving Tip: Customers are encouraged to fill out the online driver license application before their office visit: eDLapp.dmv.ca.gov

Saturday Service: The DMV offers convenient Saturday service at more than 60 of its field offices throughout the state. Individuals without an appointment are finding their visit time significantly reduced if they arrive after 2 p.m. on Saturday. Find the nearest office.

Extended Weekday Hours: The DMV opens 68 of its field offices at 7 a.m. every weekday except Wednesday when doors open at 9 a.m. Find the nearest office.
