{"id":13294,"date":"2020-04-15T15:21:36","date_gmt":"2020-04-15T22:21:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/handbook\/vehicle-industry-registration-procedures-manual-2\/general-registration-information\/addresses-on-documents\/"},"modified":"2024-11-12T09:01:34","modified_gmt":"2024-11-12T17:01:34","slug":"addresses-on-documents","status":"publish","type":"dmv_handbook","link":"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/handbook\/vehicle-industry-registration-procedures-manual-2\/general-registration-information\/addresses-on-documents\/","title":{"rendered":"Chapter 1 General Registration Information"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>1.000 Addresses on Documents (VC \u00a7\u00a74150, 4150.2, and 4453)<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Registration applications <strong>must<\/strong> include the registered owner\u2019s residence or business address <strong>and<\/strong> mailing address, if different, <strong>and<\/strong> the legal owner\/lienholder\u2019s business, residence, or mailing address.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li> <strong>Residence addresses<\/strong> must include the house number, street name, and apartment or mobile home park space number, when applicable.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li> <strong>Business addresses<\/strong> may be an office building or a street address. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Address Changes (VC \u00a7\u00a74159, 4160, and 9865)<\/strong>\u2014Registered and legal owners are required to notify DMV a change of address within 10 days by submitting a completed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/file\/notice-of-change-of-address-dmv-14-form-pdf\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Notice of Change of Address<br>(DMV 14) (PDF)<\/a> form to the address shown on the form (registered owners may complete the change of address on the DMV website).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>New registration documents are <strong>not<\/strong> issued. The owner should line through the old address on the registration document and print or type the new address on it and initial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span role=\"region\" class=\"format-label--note\"><span class=\"format-label__text\">Note<\/span> A lienholder may submit a change of address on its business letterhead. The letter <strong>must<\/strong> clearly state \u201cThis is a request of legal owner change of address\u201d and include the same information required on the DMV 14.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Legal owner\/lienholder change of address requests submitted on a DMV 14 or the legal owner\u2019s\/lienholder\u2019s business letterhead must be mailed to the address shown on the DMV 14:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>DMV Change of Address<br> PO Box 942859<br> Sacramento, CA 94259-0001<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>In Care of (c\/o) Addresses<\/strong>\u2014May be accepted when an owner does not have an established residence or place of business or requests certificates be mailed to a temporary address. Enter the owner\u2019s name(s)\/address as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>John Doe<br>c\/o James Smith (key \u201cc\/o\u201d and the name on the first address line)<br>124 Anyplace<br>Hometown, CA 12345<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Residence and Mailing Addresses in Different Cities\u2014When a vehicle owner\u2019s residence is in one city and the mailing address is in another city, only the owner\u2019s <strong>mailing<\/strong> address will be on certificates. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although both addresses are shown on the application:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A DMV 14 showing the residence or business address <strong>and<\/strong> mailing address must be completed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Paperclip the DMV 14 to the front of the application.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong> The customer lives in San Geronimo, but has his mail delivered to a Woodacre Post Office (PO) Box. In this case, list both the mailing address in Woodacre <strong>and<\/strong> the residence address in San Geronimo on the application and on the DMV 14, but only the Woodacre PO Box will show on certificates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mail Delivered Through a Post Office in a Different City<\/strong>\u2014When a vehicle owner\u2019s residence is in one city but mail is delivered via a post office in another city, the name&nbsp; of the city with the post office will be keyed as the owner\u2019s mailing address. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although both addresses are shown on the application:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A DMV 14 showing the residence or business address <strong>and<\/strong> mailing address must be completed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Paperclip the DMV 14 to the front of the application.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong> The customer lives in Muir Beach, a town without a post office or mail delivery, so mail is delivered to the Sausalito Post Office. The addresses are listed as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-dmv-columns content-columns colums-1-2-1-2\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-dmv-column col\"><body><figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><thead><tr><th>Mailing Address:<\/th><th>Residence Address:<\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td><span class=\"mobile-title\">Mailing Address:<\/span>Star Route 5 Palm Dr. Muir Beach<br>Sausalito, CA 94965<\/td><td><span class=\"mobile-title\">Residence Address:<\/span>5 Palm Dr<br>Muir Beach, CA 94965<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n<\/body><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-dmv-column col\">\n<p><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-dmv-spacer-block spacer-box\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In this case, the customer would list the mailing address in Sausalito and the residence address in Muir Beach on the application and on the DMV 14.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>APO or FPO Military Addresses<\/strong>\u2014Overseas military mail <strong>must<\/strong> include the appropriate alpha designation with the APO or FPO address, as shown below:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\n<strong>AE<\/strong>\u2014Europe, Africa, Canada, or the Middle East (the first three digits of a zip code following the military mail codes are 090\u2013098) <strong>Example:<\/strong> APO AE 090.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\n<strong>AP<\/strong>\u2014Pacific (962\u2013966) <strong>Example:<\/strong> FPO AP 962.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\n<strong>AA<\/strong>\u2014Americas other than Canada (340) <strong>Example:<\/strong> APO AA 340.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mailing Address on Registration Documents<\/strong>\u2014Vehicle registration applications must include both the registered owner\u2019s residence or business <strong>and<\/strong> mailing address, if different, but registration documents will be issued showing the registered owner\u2019s mailing address only. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If an application indicates a mailing address only on the registration documents, the <br>application must include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/file\/statement-of-facts-reg-256-pdf\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Statement of Facts (REG 256) (PDF)<\/a> form completed by the customer requesting only the mailing address be shown on the registration documents.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A DMV 14 completed by the customer showing both the residence or business address and the mailing address.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span role=\"region\" class=\"format-label--note\"><span class=\"format-label__text\">Note<\/span> Although the registration document contains both addresses, only the mailing address is keyed. Therefore, the DMV 14 is necessary to subsequently update the DMV database with the complete address information.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Leased Vehicles<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The vehicle <strong>must be<\/strong> located in California to be registered in this state. The lessor may show the lessor\u2019s out-of-state address, if applicable.
