Enter the report of sale number on the back of the title in the applicable space of the dealer reassignment section.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
Give the buyer the title, any supporting documents, and a smog certification, if required.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
Have the buyer complete a REG 256 (PDF)<\/a> stating the reason for demanding the title and confirming receipt of the title and transfer documents.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
Note<\/span> The<\/span> wording for demanding<\/strong> title: \u201cI demanded and received the certificate of title for the vehicle because. (the vehicle will be altered before being registered, or I want to do the transfer myself, etc.”).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Follow the chart to distribute the copies of the REG 51:<\/p>\n\n\n
If the Vehicle Is<\/span><\/strong><\/th> Then<\/th><\/tr><\/thead>
If the Vehicle Is<\/span>Currently registered<\/td> Then<\/span>Display the customer\u2019s operating copy of the REG 51 in the vehicle as usual.

Mail the application copy of the REG 51 with the buyer\u2019s REG 256 to DMV at the address shown on the REG 51.<\/td><\/tr>
If the Vehicle Is<\/span>Not\u00a0<\/strong>currently registered<\/td> Then<\/span>Do not<\/strong>\u00a0display the customer\u2019s operating copy on the vehicle. It must be transported or moved on a One Trip Permit (REG 402).

Write \u201cmoved on trip permit number _______\u201d or \u201cdelivered on dealer plates\u201d on the operating copy of the REG 51.

Mail the application copy of the REG 51 with the buyer\u2019s REG 256 to DMV at the address shown on the REG 51.
