For a basic transfer of a California-registered vehicle, the following must be submitted:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The California Certificate of Title properly endorsed for transfer as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Line 1<\/strong>\u2014The registered owner(s) of record must<\/strong> release interest:<\/p>\n\n\n

If the Vehicle Is Registered to<\/span><\/strong><\/th>The Following Is Required<\/span><\/strong><\/th><\/tr><\/thead>
If the Vehicle Is Registered to<\/span>Co-owners joined by \u201cand\u201d (a slash [\/] symbol between the names)<\/td>The Following Is Required<\/span>The signature of\u00a0each<\/strong>\u00a0owner<\/td><\/tr>
If the Vehicle Is Registered to<\/span>Co-owners joined by \u201cor\u201d or by \u201cand\/or\u201d<\/td>The Following Is Required<\/span>The signature of only\u00a0one<\/strong>\u00a0owner.<\/td><\/tr>
If the Vehicle Is Registered to<\/span>Co-owners with a Joint Tenants with Right of Survivorship \u201cJTRS\u201d designation<\/td>The Following Is Required<\/span>The signature of\u00a0each<\/strong>\u00a0owner.<\/td><\/tr>
If the Vehicle Is Registered to<\/span>A business entity<\/td>The Following Is Required<\/span>The name of the business entity\u00a0and<\/strong>\u00a0an authorized representative\u2019s countersignature.<\/td><\/tr>
If the Vehicle Is Registered to<\/span>An individual doing business as (dba)<\/td>The Following Is Required<\/span>The signature of the individual.<\/td><\/tr>
If the Vehicle Is Registered to<\/span>A sole owner(s) (there is no legal owner (lienholder) of record)<\/td>The Following Is Required<\/span>The signature of the sole owner(s).
Note<\/span> You may accept the signature of a sole owner on line 2 instead of line 1.<\/span><\/td><\/tr>
If the Vehicle Is Registered to<\/span>A trust with a trustee listed<\/td>The Following Is Required<\/span>The signature of the trustee for the trust.<\/td><\/tr>
If the Vehicle Is Registered to<\/span>A trust without a trustee listed<\/td>The Following Is Required<\/span>The signature of the trustee for the trust. Require a Statement of Facts (REG 256) form certifying to their appointment as trustee for the trust.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n<\/body>\n\n\n

Note<\/span> A Vehicle\/Vessel Transfer and Reassignment Form (REG 262) is <\/strong>acceptable in lieu of the registered owner\u2019s signature(s) to release on line 1 of the title or on the Application for Replacement or Transfer of Title (REG 227) (PDF)<\/a> form.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Line 2<\/strong>\u2014The lienholder of record, if any, must release interest on line 2 or a Lien Satisfied\/Legal Owner\/Title Holder Release (REG 166) (PDF)<\/a> form unless<\/strong> the name of the lienholder is to remain the same for the new owner, in which case, enter \u201cSame\u201d on Line 2 and reenter the name and address of the lienholder on the back of the title. If a California titled vehicle is two model years old or newer, a lien release on REG 227 (PDF)<\/a>, REG 166 (PDF)<\/a>, or any other type of lien release are not acceptable. A replacement title must be requested by the lienholder of record.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Note<\/span> Refer to Chapter 23 for unavailable legal owner procedures.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Odometer Mileage Disclosure<\/strong>\u2014Must be entered on a complying title or on a Vehicle\/Vessel Transfer and Reassignment Form (REG 262). Refer to Chapter 5 for odometer information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New Registered Owner Section<\/strong>\u2014The name, address, and<\/strong> driver’s license or identification card (DL\/ID) number for each<\/strong> new registered owner must<\/strong> be entered on the appropriate lines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Note<\/span> If an owner has not been issued a California DL\/ID card, their out-of-state DL\/ID number, if any, is acceptable. Print the out-of-state DL\/ID number and state of issuance in the upper-right corner of the face document or application. The out-of-state DL\/ID number cannot<\/strong> be keyed but will be microfilmed with the title.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The word \u201cNone\u201d should be entered for persons who have not been issued a DL\/ID card from California or any other state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Purchase Price and Purchase Date<\/strong>\u2014The purchase price or the word \u201cGift\u201dor \u201cTrade\u201d must <\/strong>be indicated. For a gift or trade, the new owner must<\/strong> indicate the vehicle\u2019s estimated value on a Statement of Facts (REG 256) (PDF)<\/a> form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New Legal Owner\/Lienholder Section<\/strong>\u2014The name and address of the new legal owner (lienholder), if any, must be entered on the appropriate lines. The word \u201cNone\u201d should be entered when there is no lienholder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Note<\/span> Applications submitted by a dealer lacking this information must<\/strong> be returned to the dealer.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n
