PSB registration expires 12 months from the application date and must be renewed annually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span role=\"region\" class=\"format-label--note\"><span class=\"format-label__text\">Note<\/span> A school bus that transports developmentally disabled persons (as defined by the Lanterman Developmental Disabilities Services Act, Div. 4.5 starting with the California Welfare and Institutions Code \u00a74.500) to or from vocational, prevocational, or work training centers sponsored by the State Department of Developmental Services is not eligible for PSB registration.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Original License Plate Application\u2014the following must be submitted:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A School Bus Registration or Permit Application (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/file\/school-bus-registration-or-permit-application-reg-123-pdf\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">REG 123 (PDF)<\/a>) form signed by an authorized agent of the school, vehicle owner, or vehicle operator, and CHP officer who inspected and approved the vehicle for operation as a PSB.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The California Certificate of Title or the documents required to register the vehicle to the applicant.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The PSB fee (a penalty is not collected on this fee).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Renewal:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A School Bus Registration or Permit Application (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/file\/school-bus-registration-or-permit-application-reg-123-pdf\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">REG 123 (PDF)<\/a>) form signed by an authorized agent of the school, the vehicle owner, or the vehicle operator, and the CHP officer who inspected and approved the vehicle for operation as a PSB.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The PSB fee (a penalty is not collected on this fee).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>PSB to Regular Registration<\/strong>\u2014Failure to obtain operating authority&nbsp;<strong>prior<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>to<\/strong>&nbsp;commercial operation subjects the school bus to full-year commercial registration fees from the date of first commercial operation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The procedures below must be followed:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The California Certificate of Title or the documents required to register the vehicle to the applicant.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If the vehicle is commercial, a:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2014 Request for Commercial Registration of a Passenger Vehicle (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/file\/request-for-commercial-registration-of-a-passenger-vehicle-reg-590\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">REG 590<\/a>) form from the applicant.<br>\u2014 Weight certificate unless the unladen weight can be verified from the title or the vehicle is over 10, 001 pounds unladen, then the estimated weight may be accepted on a Statement of Facts (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/file\/statement-of-facts-reg-256-pdf\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">REG 256 (PDF)<\/a>) form.<br>\u2014 A Declaration of Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW)\/Combined Gross Vehicle Weight (CGW) (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/file\/declaration-of-gvw-cgw-reg-4008\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">REG 4008<\/a>) form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Fees due as follows:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2014<strong>&nbsp;Full-Year<\/strong>\u2014full registration fee, prorated vehicle license fee (VLF), and prorated weight fee to the expiration date on the current registration card.<br>\u2014&nbsp;<strong>Partial Year Registration (PYR)<\/strong>\u2014full registration fee, prorated VLF to 12\/31\/XX, weight fee prorated for the number of months requested, and the PYR service fee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The license plates currently assigned to the vehicle.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Regular Registration to PSB\u2014The following must be submitted:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A School Bus Registration or Permit Application (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/file\/school-bus-registration-or-permit-application-reg-123-pdf\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">REG 123 (PDF)<\/a>) form signed by an authorized agent of the school, vehicle owner, vehicle operator and CHP officer who inspected and approved the vehicle for operation as a PSB.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The California Certificate of Title or the documents required to register the vehicle to the applicant.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The license plates currently assigned to the vehicle.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The PSB fee (a penalty is not collected on this fee).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Temporary Operation for Charter or Other Use<\/strong>\u2014To operate a PSB for charter or other use where the registration fees become due, the operator may secure a temporary registration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Vehicles Erroneously Registered as PSB<\/strong>\u2014Three prior years of regular registration fees may be due if it is discovered that an organization&nbsp;<strong>does not<\/strong>&nbsp;qualify for PSB registration.
