{"id":14788,"date":"2020-04-15T15:39:46","date_gmt":"2020-04-15T22:39:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/handbook\/vehicle-industry-registration-procedures-manual-2\/special-plates\/reassignment-of-old-license-plates-to-collector-vehicles\/"},"modified":"2024-04-25T14:26:18","modified_gmt":"2024-04-25T21:26:18","slug":"reassignment-of-old-license-plates-to-collector-vehicles","status":"publish","type":"dmv_handbook","link":"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/handbook\/vehicle-industry-registration-procedures-manual-2\/special-plates\/reassignment-of-old-license-plates-to-collector-vehicles\/","title":{"rendered":"21.230 Reassignment of Old License Plates to Collector Vehicles"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A previously issued regular series license plate may be reassigned to a collector vehicle provided:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>There\u00a0<strong>is not\u00a0<\/strong>a database record of the collector\u00a0<strong>license plate<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The license plate configuration is not on the record as a special interest license plate.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An original or photocopy of the California Certificate of Title, registration card or renewal notice is presented as proof the license plates were previously assigned to the vehicle.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span role=\"region\" class=\"format-label--important\"><span class=\"format-label__text\">Important<\/span> Requests for reassignment of old license plates must&nbsp;<strong>not&nbsp;<\/strong>be denied when there is a record of the vehicle license plates being assigned.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Definition of a Collector Vehicle (VC \u00a75051)<\/strong>\u2014A Collector Vehicle is a special interest vehicle of any age, that is unaltered from the manufacturer\u2019s original specifications, which, because of the vehicle\u2019s significance, such as being out-of-production, or a model of which fewer than 2,000 were sold in California in any model year, the vehicle is being collected, preserved, restored, or maintained by a collector or hobbyist for restoration, maintenance, or exhibition. A 25-year old vehicle\u00a0<strong>does not\u00a0<\/strong>automatically qualify as a collector or historical vehicle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Definition of a Collector (VC \u00a75051)<\/strong>\u2014A collector is the owner of one or more historical or special interest vehicles who collects, purchases, acquires, trades, or disposes of such vehicle(s), or parts thereof, for his or her own use, in order to preserve, restore, and maintain such vehicle(s) for a hobby or historical purposes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Reassignment of Old License plates\u2014the following must be submitted:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>An original or photocopy of the California Certificate of Title, registration card, or renewal notice is proof the license plates were previously assigned to the vehicle.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A Statement of Facts (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/file\/statement-of-facts-reg-256-pdf\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">REG 256 (PDF)<\/a>) stating:<br>\u2014 The old license plate number to be assigned to the vehicle.<br>\u2014 The old license plate(s)\u00a0will <strong>not<\/strong>\u00a0be affixed to the vehicle until DMV sends approval.<br>\u2014 The license plates currently on the vehicle will be surrendered to DMV if the old license plates are approved.<br>\u2014 Their daytime telephone number.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The license plates on the vehicle must not be picked up.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Any fees due within 75 days of the license plate application date.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span role=\"region\" class=\"format-label--note\"><span class=\"format-label__text\">Note<\/span> Due to programming limitations, a license plate that still has a record on the database cannot be reassigned.
