Some states do not issue titles for non-motorized vehicles, such as trailers. Also, in the past, some states did not issue titles to certain older motor vehicles and trailers. Dismantlers may contact a local DMV office to verify whether or not a title would have been issued for a vehicle, because of its age or type.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Vehicles From a Title State<\/strong>\u2014Evidence of ownership <strong>must be<\/strong> the title, properly endorsed by the owner\/seller. A bill of sale <strong>is acceptable<\/strong> in lieu of the seller\u2019s signature on the title. If there is a lienholder shown on the title:<span style=\"font-family: var(--font-primary); font-size: inherit;\"><\/span><\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The lien must be marked \u201cpaid\u201d and countersigned by the lienholder,<strong> or<\/strong> <\/li><li>A <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/file\/lien-satisfied-title-holder-release-reg-166-pdf\/\" target=\"_blank\">Lien Satisfied (REG 166) (PDF)<\/a> must be submitted,<strong> or<\/strong> <\/li><li>An original or certified copy of the conditional sales contract or security interest must be marked \u201cpaid\u201d and countersigned by the lienholder.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Vehicles From a Nontitle State<\/strong>\u2014The following are acceptable as evidence of ownership when a title <strong>was not<\/strong> issued by the jurisdiction where the vehicle was last registered.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>A clear title from another state or country.<\/li><li>A letter from the nontitle state indicating that a foreign title was surrendered to that state (<strong>unless <\/strong>the registration indicates a title was surrendered).<\/li><li>A bill of sale or dealer invoice to the registered owner named on the nonresident registration that identifies the vehicle by make and identification number, states the vehicle is free of all liens and encumbrances when sold to the buyer, <strong>and<\/strong> indicates the vehicle was paid for in full.<\/li><li>The original or certified copy of a conditional sales contract marked \u201cpaid\u201d with the lienholder\u2019s name and a countersignature <strong>or<\/strong> cleared by a lien satisfied.
