The following will guide you in reporting the death of a family member or friend to the DMV, transferring a vehicle, etc.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-dmv-column col\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-dmv-container shadow-box\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Notifying DMV<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Complete a <a href=\"\/portal\/file\/reporting-a-deceased-person-dmv-22-pdf\/\">DMV 22 (PDF)<\/a> form to report the death of a loved one and mail to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"soft-cta\">\n\t<div class=\"soft-cta__info\">\n\t\t\t\t<p>DMV<br>PO Box 942869, MS C271<br>Sacramento, CA 94269-0001<\/p>\n\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-dmv-spacer-block spacer-box\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>If applicable and available, include the deceased person\u2019s disabled person parking placard. Mark the DP parking placard with an \u201cX\u201d on both sides so DMV knows it is no longer valid. Ensure the placard number is still legible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-dmv-spacer-block spacer-box\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Other Steps to Consider<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>After completing and mailing the <a href=\"\/portal\/file\/reporting-a-deceased-person-dmv-22-pdf\/\">DMV 22 (PDF)<\/a>, consider the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"accordion-block js-accordion-block\" id=\"acc-vehicle-or-boat-vessel-registration\">\n\t<button class=\"accordion-block__header\" type=\"button\">\n\t\tVehicle or Boat\/Vessel Registration\n\t\t<span class=\"accordion-block__icon\">\n\t\t\t\n\t<svg class=\"icon icon-plus\" height=\"14\" width=\"14\" aria-hidden=\"false\" aria-labelledby=\"title-expand-accordion-plus-2626\" role=\"img\">\n\t\t<title id=\"title-expand-accordion-plus-2626\">Expand Accordion Plus<\/title>\n\n\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t<use xlink:href=\"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/wp-content\/themes\/dmv\/dist\/svg\/svg-sprite.svg?ver=1776199661#icon-plus\"><\/use>\n\t\t\t<\/svg>\n\n\t\t\t\t\n\t<svg class=\"icon icon-minus\" height=\"2\" width=\"14\" aria-hidden=\"false\" aria-labelledby=\"title-collapse-accordion-minus-53894\" role=\"img\">\n\t\t<title id=\"title-collapse-accordion-minus-53894\">Collapse Accordion Minus<\/title>\n\n\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t<use xlink:href=\"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/wp-content\/themes\/dmv\/dist\/svg\/svg-sprite.svg?ver=1776199661#icon-minus\"><\/use>\n\t\t\t<\/svg>\n\n\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t<\/button>\n\t<div class=\"accordion-block__content\">\n\t\t\n\n<p>Registration must be maintained while estate matters are managed, including paying registration fees or placing the vehicle on Planned Nonoperation (PNO) status on or before the registration expiration date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>File PNO status by submitting <a href=\"\/portal\/vehicle-registration\/vehicle-registration-renewal\/file-for-planned-non-operation\/\">Planned Nonoperation Certification<\/a> and paying a PNO fee up to 60 days before, but no more than 90 days after the registration expiration date. If registration or PNO fees are paid after the registration expiration date, penalties will be due.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the vehicle is currently registered but will not be operated, maintain the vehicle insurance or notify DMV that liability coverage on the vehicle has been cancelled by submitting an <a href=\"\/portal\/vehicle-registration\/affidavit-of-non-use\/\">Affidavit of Non-Use<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You may decide to transfer the vehicle\u2019s title to establish yourself as the new legal owner. In this case, the documents you submit to DMV vary by the type of transfer. The surviving spouse must complete a <a href=\"\/portal\/file\/statement-of-facts-reg-256-pdf\/\">Statement of Facts (REG 256) (PDF)<\/a> stating they are the owner\u2019s spouse and wish to retain the license plates.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Former Prisoner of War and Purple Heart License Plates Only<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Upon the death of the owner <strong>and <\/strong>surviving spouse (if any), another family member (parent, step-parent, children, step-children, grandparent, step-grandparent, sibling, or step-sibling) may retain <strong>one <\/strong>license plate as a family heirloom.
