DV License Plates exempt you from paying vehicle registration and license fees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-dmv-spacer-block spacer-box\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-dmv-container shadow-box\">\n<p>You may qualify for DV License Plates if you\u2019re a veteran who was made permanently disabled as a result of an injury or disease that occurred while on active service with the U.S. Armed Forces. You qualify if any of the following apply:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You have a disability rated at 100% by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (or the military service that discharged you) due to a diagnosed disease or disorder that substantially impairs or interferes with mobility.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You are unable to move without the aid of an assistive device.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You have lost the use of one or more limbs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You are permanently blind as defined in the <em>California Welfare and Institutions Code <\/em>\u00a719153<em>.<\/em> <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-dmv-spacer-block spacer-box\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fee Exemption<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A qualified disabled veteran is exempt from paying all fees (except fees for duplicate DV License Plates, certificates, or cards&nbsp;if they\u2019re lost, stolen, or damaged) on <strong>one<\/strong>: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Passenger motor vehicle.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Motorcycle.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Commercial vehicle with an unladen weight of 8,000 pounds or less not used for transportation for hire, compensation, or profit.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The vehicle must be owned by the disabled veteran and display DV License Plates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This fee exemption can only be used for one vehicle. Individuals who qualify for two types of exempt plates, such as DV and Ex-POW, cannot obtain both plates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-dmv-spacer-block spacer-box\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Applying for DV License Plates<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>To apply for DV License Plates, you&#8217;ll need:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A completed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/file\/certification-for-disabled-veterans-license-plates-256v-pdf\/\">Certification for Disabled Veterans License Plates (REG 256V) (PDF)<\/a> form.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Medical Certification section of the form must be signed by a licensed physician, surgeon, chiropractor, optometrist, physician assistant, nurse practitioner, or certified nurse midwife who has knowledge of the disease and\/or disability.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In lieu of the medical certification, you may submit one of the following that certifies the applicant is a disabled veteran as described in California Vehicle Code \u00a7295.7.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u00a0A certification completed and signed by a County Veterans Service Officer.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A certification completed and signed by an authorized representative of the Department of Veterans Affairs (CalVet).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A certification completed and signed by an authorized representative of the United States Department of Veterans Affairs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your current registration card, or the documentation required to register the vehicle in your name.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The license plates currently on the vehicle (you must return them to DMV).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A copy of proof of true full name and date of birth.
