What you need to know: <\/strong>Starting today, newly issued California driver\u2019s licenses and identification cards will have an updated design with advanced security features. Current driver\u2019s licenses and identification cards will remain valid until they expire.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sacramento\u00a0<\/strong>\u2014 The Department of Motor Vehicles today announced a new look for California driver\u2019s licenses and identification cards that feature the unique beauty of the state\u2019s landscape, advanced security measures and updated technology. The new card design is rolling out today. The current driver\u2019s licenses and identification cards will remain valid until their expiration date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The California driver\u2019s license and identification cards are updated periodically to improve security. The last time the card was made available with a new design and security features was in 2010. The look of the cards was changed in 2018 with the implementation of REAL ID.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cThe new cards use next generation technology to enhance security and with a design that shows California\u2019s iconic redwoods, poppies and coastline,\u201d said DMV Director Steve Gordon. \u201cWhile I know some of our customers will want the new version of the driver\u2019s license, there is no need to replace an existing license or identification card until your current one expires.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The DMV is adding images showing California\u2019s natural beauty to the design along with enhanced anti-counterfeit elements and other features. The DMV will add a digital security signature to one of the two barcodes on the back of the cards. California will be one of the first states to add this kind of digital signature. In addition, the new cards will no longer have a magnetic strip on the back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fee for the upgraded driver\u2019s license remains at $45. Identification cards are $39.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before Going to an Office \u2014 Try Online First<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most DMV tasks do not require an office visit. The DMV encourages customers to use its online services<\/a> and other service channels to complete transactions, such as eligible driver\u2019s license and vehicle registration renewals. Customers can also use the Service Advisor<\/a> on the DMV website to learn about options to complete DMV tasks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Go Paperless \u2014 To sign up for paperless vehicle registration and driver\u2019s license renewal notices, sign in or create a secure online account at dmv.ca.gov<\/a> to opt in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
