Depending on the use, commercial motor vehicles can include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Buses<\/strong>: When used to transport people for hire, compensation, or profit.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Motor trucks<\/strong>: A motor vehicle designed, used, or maintained primarily for the transportation of property.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Pickups<\/strong>: A commercially used motor truck with a manufacturer\u2019s gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of less than 11,500 lbs., an unladen weight of less than 8,001 lbs., and equipped with an open box-type bed less than nine ft. in length.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Tow trucks<\/strong>: A motor vehicle designed to transport vehicles by means of a crane, hoist, tow bars, tow line, or dolly, and primarily used for that purpose.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Truck tractor<\/strong>: A motor vehicle designed and used primarily for drawing other vehicles and not constructed to carry a load other than a part of the vehicle weight and load.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Water-well drilling rigs<\/strong>: Agricultural and oversize water-well drilling rigs are exempt, but all other types need to be registered as commercial vehicles.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Yard trucks<\/strong>: Vehicles specifically designed to move trailers within or about freight operation yards in preparation for storage or loading.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Multipurpose vehicles, passenger vehicles, pickup trucks, and station wagons can be registered as passenger or commercial vehicles, depending on their vehicles<\/strong>: A motor vehicle, other than a motor truck or truck tractor, designed to carry more than 10 but not more than 15 people (including the driver), which is maintained and used primarily for nonprofit work-related transportation of adults for the purpose of ridesharing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Passenger vehicles<\/strong>: Not used to transport people for hire, compensation, or profit.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Housecars or motorhomes<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Trailer coaches<\/strong>: Trailer coaches may transport property, but are designed&nbsp;<strong>primarily&nbsp;<\/strong>for human habitation or occupancy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Military equipment<\/strong>: Operated by non-civilian personnel, which is owned or operated by the U.S. Department of Defense, including the National Guard.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Implements of husbandry<\/strong>: Operated by someone\u00a0<strong>not\u00a0<\/strong>required to have a driver&#8217;s license.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"accordion-block js-accordion-block\" id=\"acc-how-to-register-commercial-vehicles\">\n\t<button Fifth-wheel trailers and camp trailers are registered as a trailer coach (not PTI) or camp trailer (PTI) based on the length, width, and size.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tow\/auxiliary dollies are not required to be registered in California. However, you may opt to register as PTI. If you do not register as PTI, remove and surrender any existing license plate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While registration as PTI is optional for tow\/auxiliary dollies in California, you may want to register it as PTI if you will tow it out of state, because other states&#8217; registration requirements vary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To register a permanent trailer, complete and submit:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Titling document(s) (out-of-state title, Application for Registration of New Vehicle (REG 397), manufacturer&#8217;s statement of origin, etc.). If a REG 397 is not submitted, you will also need:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/file\/application-for-title-or-registration-reg-343-pdf\/\">Application for Title or Registration (REG 343) (PDF)<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/file\/verification-of-vehicle-reg-31-pdf\/\">Verification of Vehicle (REG 31) (PDF)<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/file\/statement-of-facts-reg-256-pdf\/\">Statement of Facts (REG 256) (PDF)<\/a> form declaring the trailer&#8217;s unladen weight (no weight certificate).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/file\/permanent-trailer-identification-pti-certification-and-application-reg-4017-pdf\/\">Permanent Trailer Identification (PTI) Application and Certification (REG 4017) (PDF)<\/a>, if there is no legal owner and you want a paper Certificate of Title (complete Side A and include a PTI title fee). If you do not apply for a Certificate of Title, DMV only issues a PTI card and maintains an electronic ownership record.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/vehicle-registration\/registration-fees\/\">Applicable fees<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Trailer Fees<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A PTI service fee is charged for the original registration and every five years for renewal. A PTI card is issued with original registration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">PTI Renewal<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>About 60 days prior to the registration expiration date, you will receive a PTI service fee notice. Upon payment, you will receive a notice of acknowledgment for the payment. However, no new sticker will be issued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">PTI License Plates<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Upon original PTI registration, owners choose to retain their existing California trailer license plate and be issued a PTI sticker, or be issued a PTI license plate (no sticker).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Personalized and special interest license plates may be retained or requested for PTI trailers. There are two schedules, one for vehicles with a GVWR of 14,001 to 26,000 pounds and one for vehicles with a GVWR greater than 26,000 pounds. Each schedule is based on model year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1.
