These vehicles may be built from a kit and may include a combination of new and used parts, especially if they are constructed using a junked vehicle that was previously dismantled.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-dmv-spacer-block spacer-box\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-dmv-container shadow-box\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Registering a Specially Constructed Vehicle<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To register a specially constructed vehicle (including a kit commercial vehicle), you will need: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A completed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/file\/application-for-title-or-registration-reg-343-pdf\/\">Application for Title or Registration (REG 343) (PDF)<\/a><span> form.<\/span> <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A vehicle verification by an authorized DMV employee.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Bring your vehicle to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/locations\/field-offices\/\">DMV office<\/a> for verification.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A completed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/file\/statement-of-construction-reg-5036-pdf\/\">Statement of Construction (REG 5036) (PDF)<\/a> form.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bills of sale and\/or receipts for major component parts (the engine, frame, transmission, and body).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If the vehicle is a trailer constructed from a purchased kit, please present the Manufacturer&#8217;s Certificate of Origin or a receipt or invoice identifying the kit purchased.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An electronic Vehicle Safety Systems Inspection (VSSI) certificate.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A weight certificate from a <a href=\"http:\/\/publicscales.net\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">California Certified Public Weighmaster<\/a>, if the vehicle is a pickup or truck.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A <a href=\"\/portal\/vehicle-registration\/smog-inspections\/\">smog certification<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"\/portal\/vehicle-registration\/registration-fees\/\">Registration fees<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/locations\/field-offices\/\">Visit a DMV office<\/a> to begin the application process. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span role=\"region\" class=\"format-label--note\"><span class=\"format-label__text\">Note<\/span> A SPCNS vehicle <strong><span>does not<\/span><\/strong> refer to a vehicle that has been repaired or restored using replacement parts, or to a vehicle modified from its original design.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong> A Volkswagen &#8220;Beetle&#8221; with modified fenders, engine compartment lid, and front end is not considered a specially constructed vehicle because it is still recognizable as a Volkswagen &#8220;Beetle&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-dmv-spacer-block spacer-box\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Altered Vehicles<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you change or alter your vehicle&#8217;s body and spend more than $2,000 or more on the alterations, or if your alterations place the vehicle in a different weight classification, you must report these alterations to DMV. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>To report alterations, you will need:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The vehicle&#8217;s California Certificate of Title.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A vehicle verification by an authorized DMV employee completed <strong>after<\/strong> the alteration is completed.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Bring your vehicle to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/locations\/field-offices\/\">a DMV office<\/a> for verification.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li> A completed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/file\/statement-of-facts-reg-256-pdf\/\">Statement of Facts, Vehicle Body Change Statement (REG 256) (PDF)<\/a> form.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li> A weight certificate from a <a href=\"http:\/\/publicscales.net\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">California Certified Public Weighmaster<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Evidence of purchase of (or ownership of) the added parts.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This can include bills of sale, invoices, or sales slips. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you placed a body on the vehicle which you removed from another vehicle that you own, please provide the license plate number or vehicle identification number for the other vehicle.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li> Additional <a href=\"\/portal\/vehicle-registration\/registration-fees\/\">fees<\/a> that&nbsp;may be due if the vehicle falls into a higher weight
