Sacramento—The California Department of Motor Vehicles will officially dedicate its second operating office in the city of Poway tomorrow at 8 a.m. with special ceremonies, a ribbon-cutting and an open house to show off the new facility.

A number of special guests have been invited to the event, including representatives of the city of Poway, the Poway Chamber of Commerce and local elected officials.

DMV Director George Valverde will also be on hand, and says the dedication is a very special occasion for the department. “It’s our 169th office in California, and the first completely new facility we have opened in over a decade. For various reasons, we have closed and consolidated several facilities over the past few years, which is always difficult, so I’m delighted to be presiding over an office opening for a change.”

The new office is called “Poway Center,” and will offer a full range of services, including registration, driver license transactions and drive tests. While appointments are always encouraged, customers will be able to walk in and do their business on a face-to-face basis. The older office in Poway, located at 13359 Poway Road, is now an appointments-only facility for registration and driver license transactions. However, no drive tests will be conducted at that site, and customers who need to schedule one will be referred to Poway Center.

Valverde said the new office is actually the result of a lost lease for the old office, but when all of the replacement alternatives were considered, it was decided to obtain space at the Poway Center location, downsize the old office a bit at a different location, and provide increased service to the fast-growing city of Poway. He also noted that as space becomes available in the near future, the Poway Center office will expand to provide more room and even better customer service.

“We’re all about serving customers their way—on their terms. Sometimes that’s in a brick and mortar facility such as Poway Center, but we really want to encourage folks to use the Internet as much as possible to do their business with us. Many of the transactions done in an office can be handled by going to our website at www.dmv.ca.gov. That includes registering vehicles and renewing driver licenses and much, much more,” he said.

The Poway Center office has actually been open for business since May 1, 2006, and so far customers are delighted. Office Manager Martha Dreves says she has received a number of compliments about how smoothly things have gone. “People say it’s great, and are really happy there’s a beautiful new office to serve them. And I can certainly say we’re absolutely delighted to be here for the people of Poway as well!”

Dreves says after the dedication ceremony is over, refreshments will served until 9 a.m. when the facility will be opened for business.
