Clovis – The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) officially dedicated a new, larger and more energy efficient office serving the City of Clovis and surrounding communities today with special ceremonies and an open house to showcase the new facility. The building is in the midst of earning Silver certification under the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building rating system.
DMV Director George Valverde speaks during the August 8 dedication of the
new Clovis Field Office.
"The DMV is committed to building energy efficient offices which contributes to customer and employee well-being and productivity," said DMV Director George Valverde. "The Clovis office is built in a growing community with the customer in mind."
Director Valverde noted that the Department looked at Clovis as an opportunity to find a location which afforded more interior space as well as ample customer parking.
The Clovis office is the first State-leased facility of its kind to earn LEED certification in the State of California. Clovis joins South Sacramento and San Ysidro as the department's first "green" field offices.
The office includes a well-designed ventilation and monitoring system, reduced-flow plumbing fixtures that will conserve water, and a storm run-off system that will settle out sediment reducing the load on the city's infrastructure. The facility also includes a carport, a small garden setting with benches and a motorcycle test pattern.
Obtaining Silver LEED certification also required sorting and recycling waste during construction. New materials were also specified with high recycled content. The LEED Green Building Rating System is the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction, and operation of high performance green buildings. It was developed by the U.S. Green Building Council, a 10,000-member non-profit trade organization, which has developed the LEED system to promote a whole-building approach to sustainability.
