Modesto – The owner and a sales representative of Rocky’s Auto Sales, located at 1002 Yosemite Blvd. in Modesto, was arrested today by Investigators from the California Department of Motor Vehicles and the Stanislaus County District Attorney’s Office. Both of the suspects could face maximum prison sentence of three years if convicted.
“The allegations against this auto dealer are egregious and warrant full prosecution,” said DMV Director George Valverde. “I applaud the efforts of our Investigations Division and our partnership with the District Attorney’s Office,” he said.
Owner Sarla “Sandy” Sharma, 61, and her son, Akash “Alex” Sharma, 27 were arrested on charges of grand theft with 76 overt acts listed on the criminal complaint.
The allegations against the dealership include having an unlicensed sales representative on the lot (including one who was only 13 years old), selling stolen vehicles, stealing back cars from customers, preparing and submitting fraudulent documents as well as writing bad checks to customers and the Department of Motor Vehicles when renewing their dealer’s license. Rocky’s Auto Sales dealers license has since been revoked by the DMV.
Other allegations include selling vehicles that were damaged, had major mechanical defects or would not pass a smog inspection.
There are 20 known alleged victims so far, but DMV believes there could be many more. Rocky’s Auto Sales allegedly targeted low income car buyers as well as buyers with little or damaged credit.
Those who believe they were victimized should call DMV Investigator Dave Fabiano at 209-948-7991 or the District Attorney's Office at 209-525-5550. Callers to the DA's Office should ask to speak to a member of the Consumer Fraud Unit (Donna Robinson, John Goulart, or Mike Hermosa).
