Sacramento—The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has unveiled its newest Internet innovation designed to increase customer convenience and save time. DMV’s upgraded Online Fee Calculator will now allow customers to compute fees due for vehicle registration renewals and used vehicle purchases.

“We are continuously looking for common sense solutions to meet Gov. Schwarzenegger’s challenge that every state department in California apply existing technology to make everyday transactions quicker and easier,” said DMV Director George Valverde. “Using the Internet helps eliminate unnecessary trips to a DMV office, and the added features of the Online Fee Calculator are yet another step forward in our mission of ‘Driving Change’ to save our customers time, energy and money.”

The new features are in addition to the calculator’s current capability to measure fees due on new and out-of-state vehicle registrations and to determine vehicle license fees paid in order to calculate federal and state income tax deductions.

To use the calculator, customers must provide the license plate and vehicle identification numbers, county of registration, zip code and more.  The calculator will then display the amount of fees due to DMV, along with any penalties, transfer costs and use tax (sales tax) if applicable.  The calculator will not display the name or the address of the person attached to any vehicle record.

Online transactions have become increasingly popular with DMV customers over the past several years. In 2007, almost 4.9 million vehicles were registered by way of the department’s Internet site—an increase of almost 29 per cent over 2006. Almost 487,000 persons renewed their driver licenses electronically in 2007, a 25 percent increase over 2006. And almost 600,000 Californians have filed changes of address with the department using the website option since it was introduced in August of 2006.

The Online Fee Calculator is available at www.dmv.ca.gov, which allows customers to use it from their homes or offices at their convenience.

Don’t Stand In Line, Go Online!Doing business with the DMV has never been easier. The DMV offers an array of services to customers 24 hours a day, 7 days a week through its Web site (www.dmv.ca.gov), including online appointments for written and drive tests; vehicle registration and driver license renewals, selection of personalized license plates, changes of address and payment of fees via secure debit transactions.

DMV is a department under the Business, Transportation and Housing Agency, which is under the direction of Secretary Dale E. Bonner. The DMV licenses drivers; maintains driving records; registers and tracks official ownership of vehicles and vessels; investigates auto and identity-related fraud; and licenses car dealers, driving schools, and traffic violator schools.
