West Hollywood—The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) today dedicated its newest field office during Grand Opening ceremonies at 936 North Formosa Blvd., in Hollywood.  The exterior celebrates the glamour of the Hollywood location that capitalizes on a 1950s-era retro style and the resurgent popularity of classic American cars.

“Enhanced customer service is a top priority at the Department of Motor Vehicles,” DMV Director George Valverde said during today’s dedication ceremony. “This office not only celebrates the Hollywood tradition, but also offers an energy-efficient and customer-friendly design.”

Refurbishing a 1946 service garage, Shlemmer + Algaze +Associates Interiors and Architecture took the opportunity to create a building with a look-and-feel that is a throwback to the past.   Using the attributes of the original structure, contractors were able to utilize the abundance of day lighting already streaming through the building minimizing the need for electricity.  Other aspects of energy conservation efforts include state of the art heating and cooling equipment as well as a “cool roof” that deflects 70 percent of radiant sun energy.

The 14,656 square foot office opened to the public on April 1, 2008, and its 21 employees will serve 200,000 customers annually.
