Sacramento– Investigators from the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Stockton District arrested the former owner of Newman Auto Plaza on 35 felony counts of grand theft.
Norris Anthony Poulsen, 58, of Newman was arrested today and booked into the Stanislaus County Jail on an arrest warrant issued by Stanislaus Superior Court. Bail was set at $500,000. Poulsen allegedly defrauded customers by failing to pay off trade-in vehicles, selling vehicles and not properly transferring title, failing to perfect titles for lending institutions that provided customer loans, and failure to pay automobile auctions for purchased vehicles. Estimated losses are in excess of $590,000.
The arrest is the result of a DMV investigation that turned up numerous violations and consumer complaints following the closure of the dealership in September 2007.
DMV Investigations is actively attempting to locate titles for the vehicles sold to consumers to help resolve the transfers. Thus far, DMV has been able to help obtain 10 titles for local consumers.
Editor’s Note Tom Wilson, Supervising Investigator at DMV’s Fresno Investigations Office, is available for interviews. He can be contacted at (559) 647-7128.
