Riverside — The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) today announced the opening of a new Telephone Service Center at 6465 Sycamore Canyon Blvd.

In an effort to reduce the cost of maintaining separate facilities and bring efficiencies to customers, five telephone service centers located in San Diego, Van Nuys, North Hollywood, Santa Ana and Irvine have been consolidated into one center in Riverside.

“The department has made a long-term investment in the City of Riverside that furthers DMV’s commitment to the community,” said DMV Director George Valverde. “By consolidating these services we will not only be saving the state much needed funds, we will be able to deliver our services more efficiently to our customers.”

Director Valverde noted that the consolidation brings 238 new workers to the local economy. The new telephone service center follows the June 2008 opening of a larger and more energy efficient field office on Sycamore Canyon Boulevard that employs 31 workers.

The new telephone service center will handle more than 14 million customer calls annually providing a variety of services. This marks the second of three telephone service center consolidation efforts in the state bringing the number of centers from nine to four.

The department continually strives for improved customer service. During 2008, online business transactions increased by more than 15 percent to more than 8 million annually. During the first quarter of 2009, online transactions increased by more than 19 percent over the same period of a year earlier.
