DMV Opens Business Services Center in Bakersfield

Sacramento –Designed to serve industry customers faster and more efficiently, the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has opened a new Business Services Center in Bakersfield at 5800 District Blvd. The new center, which opened Feb. 22, serves industry customers, including automotive dealers and registration services.  

“The new center is a one-stop shop that enhances services to our industry customers,” said DMV Director, George Valverde. “In this economy, time is money and this office is specially equipped to handle a multitude of transactions in an expeditious manner.”

Industry customers from Kern and surrounding counties can now bring their specialized DMV transactions in mass bundles either by mail or in person for processing at the new Bakersfield Business Service Center.  The Center, staffed by eight DMV employees, is projected to handle close to 150,000 vehicle registration transactions annually. Technicians at the new Bakersfield Business Service Center will be trained in specialized industry transactions, streamlining and expediting the process. 

Currently, DMV has licensing files on 6,000 occupational licensing businesses statewide ranging from car dealers, vehicle manufacturers, driving and traffic violator schools, to dismantlers. Kern County alone has over 500 businesses that hold occupational licenses.  The Business Service Center will also have an Occupational Licensing office which will be open every Tuesday to accept occupational licensing applications and answer any questions from current and prospective occupational licensees. In addition, the Bakersfield Business Service Center will house a Driver Safety office handling approximately 4,000 driver’s license re-examination cases per year.

The 6,595 square-foot facility was built with energy efficiency as a priority, and is currently registered with the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system. The goal of the project is to achieve the level of LEED Commercial Interiors Silver Certification by mid 2010. In order to achieve this certification the project team aggressively pursued energy and water savings beyond the standard required for buildings in California as well as indoor air quality.  Other factors in consideration for Silver certification were the recycling of building materials during construction

DMV is a department under the Business, Transportation and Housing Agency, which is under the direction of Secretary Dale E. Bonner. The DMV licenses drivers; maintains driving records; registers and tracks official ownership of vehicles and vessels; investigates auto and identity-related fraud; and licenses car dealers, driving schools, and traffic violator schools.
