DMV Sees Surge in Online Business

Sacramento – Online business transactions numbered close to 2.6 million during the first quarter of 2010, a 20.4 percent increase over the same three-month period a year ago, the Department of Motor Vehicles announced today.

“We have seen a general, across-the-board increase in the use of our online services,” said DMV Director George Valverde. “Renewing a registration online is a win-win for our customers: it saves them time by going online and gets tags into their hands faster than conventional mail.”

Director Valverde noted that the most popular online option for customers continued to be vehicle registration renewals, which totaled 1,729,671 for the period ending March 31, an 18.4 percent increase over the same period for 2009. In March, 652,139 vehicle registrations were logged online, a 25 percent jump from the same month a year ago. Customers who renew registrations online generally receive their tags within five business days.

Online driver license renewals rose 11.2 percent during the quarter compared to a year ago, as a record 100,403 customers renewed their licenses online during the month of March.

Filing an online Change of Address and a Notice of Release of Liability (NRL) rose 39.0 and 25.6 percent, respectively. A record 118,632 Californians filed an NRL online during the month of March.
