Sacramento – The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) arrested a Union City man on 12 felony counts of perjury and filing false documents with a public agency relating to the illegal purchase and sale of 1,250 vehicles.

DMV investigators arrested Mohammad A. Sheikh, 55, on August 23. He was then booked into the Santa Rita Jail with bail set at $390,000.

Background
The DMV opened its 12- month investigation after numerous customers complained of having trouble with registering their newly acquired vehicles. It is alleged that Sheikh set up numerous false auto repair businesses in Brentwood, Oakland and Richmond, submitted fraudulent documents to apply for various government permits.

This enabled Sheikh and others to gain access at local auto auctions where they purchased 1,200 vehicles valued over 2.8 million dollars. The vehicles were then sold at unlicensed used car lots operating on streets and vacant lots. Title and registrations documents were then falsified and submitted to area DMV field offices. It was found that many of these vehicles were salvaged. Salvaged vehicles are damaged to the extent where they are deemed a total loss by insurance companies.
