Sacramento – Californians conducted online business with the DMV in record numbers during 2010, accounting for more than 10.5 million transactions, a 12 percent increase over the previous year, the Department of Motor Vehicles announced today.

"Doing business online makes sense for both our customers, and the DMV," said DMV Director, George Valverde. "We are continually looking for new and innovative ways to leverage the internet so that we can provide faster and easier alternatives for customers."

Online vehicle registrations, easily the most popular online transaction, numbered 7,153,070 in 2010, an 11.5 percent increase over the previous year.

Online driver license renewals surged 8 percent to 1,039,100 in 2010, compared to 961,963 in 2009.

Online Change of Address (COA) rose 10.1 percent to 992,859, which represented almost half of the overall total of 2 million COA filings in 2010.

Online filings of Notices of Release of Liability (NRL) shot up 21.4 percent to more than 1.2 million in 2010, which mirrored the 21 percent of the 5.6 million total NRLs filed overall.

Director Valverde said that the department continues to leverage new technologies to bring forth additional online options for customers. In December, the department unveiled Personalized Online Accounts whereby customers can manage their DMV business online in a secure environment. And, later this spring, the department anticipates making renewals of identification cards also available through the internet.
