Government Technology Awards Announcement

Sacramento– A web-based tool for customers to retrieve their driving record and Android and iPhone apps earned the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) two of the Center for Digital Government's Best of California Awards during the annual Government Technology Conference yesterday at the Sacramento Convention Center.

"We are extremely proud of our talented staff at DMV for developing these applications," said DMV Director George Valverde. "One of our goals is to take advantage of existing technologies and IT trends to better serve our customers."

The two projects have proven to be very popular with DMV customers. To date, more than 70,000 customers have retrieved their driving record for a $2 fee by using the new online application, which won in the Best Application Serving the Public category.

The Android and iPhone applications, titled "DMV Now," won for Best In-House Developed Application. These apps – which combined average approximately 20,000 downloads per month – allow Android and iPhone users the ability to find a local office with its actual wait time and provide turn-by-turn directions based on the user's GPS location, take sample written driving tests, access a large library of DMV driver education videos and access other important DMV alerts.

The Best of California Awards program was established to honor IT professionals and projects in California state and local government and education organizations for their outstanding contributions, dedication and hard work.
