Bakersfield– Investigators from the California Department of Motor Vehicles arrested Jose Argueta, owner of Argueta's Auto Sales and Repair, last Wednesday, Sept. 14, on several felony counts of theft by false pretenses stemming from several complaints received from consumers who allegedly paid Argueta for vehicles that were never received, and for repairs that were never completed.
Argueta's Auto Sales and Repair is located at 2925 Edison Highway in Bakersfield.
"Our Investigations Department is constantly on the lookout for anyone who tries to skirt the law at the expense of others, said DMV Director George Valverde. "Here we have a good example of how the complaints we receive from our customers can ultimately put an end to illegal operations."
Argueta is being charged with a total of 12 felonies and 11 misdemeanors; his bail was set at $317,500. On Sept. 16, 2011, the Kern County District Attorney filed the following charges against Argueta:
Six felony counts of Penal Code 532 (Theft by false pretenses); four felony counts of Penal Code 115(a) (Offer false or forged instrument to be filed); three felony counts of Penal Code 470(b) (Forgery); one misdemeanor count of California Vehicle Code 11700 (Unlicensed dealer); and one misdemeanor count of California Vehicle Code 11500 (Unlicensed dismantler) .
Argueta remains in custody.
DMV Investigators found that Argueta created a scheme to transfer vehicles by listing the names of others as the selling party while collecting payments and avoiding the responsibility of maintaining a dealer license.
Argueta was booked into the Kern County Jail where it was discovered that he had an outstanding civil arrest warrant for the charges of contempt.
