DMV Self Service Terminals Serve One Million Customers

Sacramento – Today, the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) announced their timesaving Self Service Terminals (SST) have now assisted over one million customers since initial installation in late 2010.  The freestanding terminals are in 35 DMV field offices statewide. 

The popular blue and gold kiosks use touch screen technology to renew vehicle registration or file for Planned Non-Operation (PNO) Status without waiting in line.  The machine is designed to get vehicle registration cards and tags into a customer’s hand within minutes.

What can be renewed using the SST?

  • Autos
  • Motorcycles
  • Pickups
  • Commercial vehicles that do not pay Commercial Vehicle Registration Act (CVRA) fees
  • Coach and Park model trailers

The easy-to-use self service station accepts cash, electronic check, credit, or debit card payments. It resembles an ATM and gives directions in English and Spanish. To see how it works, check out

The first SST was installed in October 2010 at the South Sacramento office.  Since then 34 others have been installed across the state. For a complete list of SST locations, visit http://www.dmv.ca.gov/fo/fo_sst.htm.

The SST is just one of many automated services the DMV provides to make your experience better than ever.  In recent months, the department has retooled its appointment system. You can now make same day or next day appointments.  Customers can call DMV’s customer service department at 800.777.0133 and if you don’t want to wait, we can call you back with our Virtual Hold system.  We also have information and services right at your fingertips with our android and iPhone applications called “DMV NOW”.

With the new “DMV NOW” Smartphone applications for the Android and iPhone, customers on the go are now able to make appointments, find a local field office, and take sample driving tests among many other options.

And, customers making advance appointments will automatically receive a courtesy reminder call three days in advance of their scheduled appointment. DMV’s “Appointment Notify” telephone system reminds customers about the date, time, field office location and type of appointment.

Don’t Stand In Line, Go Online! Doing business with the DMV has never been easier. The DMV offers an array of services to customers 24 hours a day, 7 days a week through its Web site (www.dmv.ca.gov), including online appointments for written and drive tests; vehicle registration and driver license renewals, selection of personalized license plates, changes of address and payment of fees via secure debit transactions. Customers can also effect transactions by calling DMV customer service at (800) 777-0133. DMV is a department under the Business, Transportation and Housing Agency.
