FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Second Public Workshop on Autonomous Vehicles

Sacramento –On Tuesday, June 18, 2013, the California Department of Motor Vehicles will conduct the second in a series of public workshops to assist in the development of regulations governing the testing and use of autonomous vehicles on California public roadways.

The workshop will begin 10:00 a.m. in the Assembly Room of the Department of Motor Vehicles Headquarters located at 2415 First Avenue in Sacramento.

The workshop is being held in response to the passage of Senate Bill 1298 which requires the Department to adopt regulations establishing insurance requirements as well as requirements for the submission of an application to operate an autonomous vehicle, including any testing, equipment, performance standards, or safety standards. The workshop allows increased public participation in the rulemaking process and will help the Department improve the quality of the regulations that will eventually be adopted.

This workshop will address topics related to insurance requirements, bond requirements, vehicle identification/registration, and limited testing requirements.

The department requests that those individuals planning to participate in the workshop notify DMV of their attendance and the areas in which they will be providing comment. If you plan to attend, please send an e-mail as soon as possible to LRegulations@dmv.ca.gov.

Participation in the workshop will be in addition to, and not in substitution for, any participation in the formal rulemaking process. The Department welcomes comments and ideas on how to implement the requirements of SB 1298, and interested parties will have the ability to participate in the formal regulation process when the Department publishes the actual proposed text of the regulations.

A live webcast of the workshop will be available. For a direct link, please visit the DMV web page at http://www.dmv.ca.gov during the workshop.
