Deployment of Autonomous Vehicles for Public Operation
The regulations for post-testing deployment of autonomous vehicles establish the requirements for manufacturers to meet prior to operation on California’s on public roads.
On February 26, 2018, the Office of Administrative Law approved the deployment regulations.
On March 2, 2018, the department posted a public notice of that approval on its website and can begin approving applications 30 days after the notice on April 2, 2018.
Information for Manufacturers Applying for Deployment of Autonomous Vehicles Permit
The autonomous vehicles deployment regulations establish an Autonomous Vehicle Deployment Program that is administered by the department's Autonomous Vehicles Branch. DMV will begin accepting applications for the Autonomous Vehicle Deployment Program on March 2, 2018. An application for a deployment permit cannot be approved and permit issued until April 2, 2018.
